Apple... PC... Linux!

Here are my thoughts on Apple's Mac commercials (you know, the ones that say "I'm a mac" and "I'm a PC"? yeah, those ones)

It's really all down to images. The PC is always portrayed as an obese man wearing a tight suit and sometimes carrying a suitcase. So you definetely don't want to deal with him.
Now, the mac is portrayed as a slightly taller, skinny man who is unshaven, laid back, and looks like he's never done any work in his life. I frankly wouldn't want to buy a lazy computer. Agree?

So, of course the underlying message in these commercials is simple: buy a linux!

10-15 stabber

I was just reading a Terry Pratchett book, and got the idea for a new type of poker. Here's how it goes:

First hand
10 cards are dealt to each player, and each player looks at his or her cards. Two cards are dealt in the middle of the table: one face up, and one face down. If a hand is being made out of cards that have the same suit or number as the face up card, the value of that card is doubled. For example, if a seven of diamonds is set down face up, and I have a pair of sevens in my hand, that pair of sevens counts as four sevens. or, if I have just one seven in my hand, that counts as a pair of sevens. Now, of course this adds for new possible hands, such as three pairs, etc. I'll post the new hand values up once I work them out.
5 cards from each hand are set face down to be used later. Two or three rounds of betting ensue.
Each player reveals his or her hand, and the face down card is turned face up. This card is the opposite of the other one: any card with the same number or suit of it is halved in value.
The player with the highest hand takes the pot.

Second hand and on
Ten cards, again, are dealt to each player, that each player can use. Again, the face-up and face-down cards are dealt to the middle of the table.
The one difference between this and the first hand is the five cards set down by each player on the previous hand. These cards are picked up and put into the hand of the player. five cards from this player's hand are put onto the top of the deck, and five cards are set face-down in front of the player to be used later.
The hand proceeds as normal.

The game's name, for now, will be known as 10-15 stabber

The Simpsons Movie - A review

Just recently saw the simpsons movie, and decided to make a little review so you people reading this blog can decide whether to spend the five bucks

It begins with an Itchy and Scratchy movie (blow up the cat!). Homer simpson stands up and starts complaining: "This sucks! Why are we paying money to watch something that we could get at home for free! Everyone watching this movie is an idiot!" he then turns to the audience, "Including YOU!" Then leads on to a crazy turn of events lasting the entire movie including, but not limited to Green Day playing the Simpsons Theme, Lake Springfield being terribly polluted, a trip to Alaska, and the Government attempting to blow Springfield up. This is a good movie, not entirely comedy as I had expected, but some action, some romance, some feeling. In fact, I almost would have liked to laugh a bit more. Due to this smaller-than-needed amount of comedy, I give it 4 1/2 stars.

The Importance of Friends

Sitting here listening to my punk rock... I leave for a week-long summer camp in Michigan tomorrow. before I get back, a) the only friend I have who I can trust with my feelings leaves for Kansas City, Missouri (to return in two years), and b) an entire family of this-good friends who aren't quite my age leave for Australia (to return in September). As I mourn over this unfortunate turn of events I begin to realize how important friends are in our lives. I always took these people for granted, and now, at least for the one who is going for two years as I plan to head off to college by then, I will probably never see them again.

Brand New Phone

A new phone that I got off of ebay arrived in the mail, a Samsung SYNC. This is an excellent phone and is much better than I expected. the camera is an amazing 2 megapixels, it has a color outer screen for things such as picture caller ID, self-portraits, and a color visualizer for the MP3 player. It does lack a few features though. No voice-dialing, the UI is difficult compared to other phones, and there is no IR port. I rate it 4 1/2 stars.

Wireless power?

Reading a new Buisness 2.0 article here, it says something about wireless power. A Wired article a few weeks ago said the same thing. I had that idea years ago! though I never wrote it down, so it couldn't count as prior art, could it? Though if they haven't patented it, I guess this blog entry could count...but would they have put it in a magazine if they hadn't patented it already? I'm a bit vague on the patent process, but I do have an idea of my own that I want to patent, so I guess that should change, eh?

Here's how the idea works:

You plug a radio transmitter into the wall, and small electronic devices have chip-based receivers in them that convert the radio waves into electricity (Radio waves are a form of light, so this makes sense on the same line that solar panels make sense). Whenever you bring this nearby it automatically starts charging. It's a wonderful idea, but aren't radio waves harmful? Wouldn't it have the same effectiveness of a solar panel (a.k.a. about 15%)? I'm sure the geniuses over at Silicon Valley will be able to work out the kinks. They usually do.

The Joys of Running a Wiki

So a little while ago I got the (seemingly marvelous at the time) idea to run a wiki for my class. Started it up, added a few pages, invited my friends...and there it stops. It seems everyone is under the impression that they cannot edit it, at least not without my permission. They don't get the whole point of a wiki. I go to a gifted school, and I guess I expected more. Every week it seems I get an email complaining about how the page "sucks". Everyone is complaining to me to change something, and it seems they don't get the point of how they could just take it into their own hands. I made it a wiki so that I would not be the only one to police the page. I don't have the time to be the only one able to do this. Despite my efforts, this fate seems to have been brought upon me anyway. Life isn't fair, but don't you want to try and make it that way?

Guitar Recording

So, with the use of two cables, one adapter, one amp, and my laptop, I have just managed to hook it up so that I can digitally record my guitar playing. For a lead/rythm rock/notrock player, songwriter, and singer with very little technology like me, this is a big thing.

I have my guitar hooked up to my amp using the normal cable, and then the headphones port on my amp hooked up via a standard guitar plug-to-auxiliary adapter and an auxiliary-to-auxiliary cable to my laptop.

I like writing about things that make me happy
